My Little Fisherman

This boy is a natural.

He loves to fish, he has the patience and the endurance it takes to sit for hours and wait for a fish. He is really good also, so he doesn't usually have to wait that long.

He knows how to be quiet and how to pull on the rod to get the fish.

Last weekend he won the most fish caught, fifteen, at Cub Scout camp.

Look at that face, isn't he just a beautiful boy.

I am so proud of my BIG boy!!

"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." At once they left their nets and followed him. Matthew 4:19-20

Oh My Alex!!

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:11

Alex learned this the hard way yesterday.

Alex loves animals, bugs and creatures of all types. He is drawn to them...therefore he is not afraid of any of them either. This is the child who will pick up a spider in the kitchen without even thinking about it and take it outside for me. Michael is more like me and allows Alex to do it.

I have to watch him closely with dogs that people walk down our street.

As I posted earlier, Alex is the Ant Whisperer and can play with them and not get bitten...at least if he does he is not affected by them.

This led Alex to believe that he could do the same with bees.

On Tuesday night I had my sweet Mary and Nichole over and Alex was playing outside in the hedge...with bees. Nichole being Nichole thought this was really cool and funny. Mom being mom told Alex several times that if he played with the bees he was going to get stung.

He did not agree with me.

I never actually told him 'do not play with the bees'. He did not disobey me, so therefore I could not punish him.

He made it through Tuesday fine, which therefore led him to believe when we got home on Wednesday he could continue to play with the bees.

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour 1 Peter 5:8

I was in the kitchen cooking food for HOPE group and I could hear Alex outside excited and talking to the bees...I warned him again...he actually held one in his fingers and he reminded me of Idgie on Fried Green Tomatoes who was a bee charmer.

When it was time to leave I went looking for Alex. He wasn't outside...I went to his room...the door was locked. I told him to open the door, when he did, I said it's time to go.

Alex told me he did not want to go to HOPE group...very strange since he loves playing with Easton and all of his big friends (college people). When I asked him why, he said that he didn't want to tell me.

I looked at him and said "Alex, did you get stung by a bee"? He started to cry and said yes. Praise the Lord he is not allergic and did not swell up...but it sure did hurt.

I didn't have to say anything.

So Alex learned a lesson. He belongs to Jesus and thankfully Jesus disciplines those He loves.

This is what I am praying for Alex so that the next time I warn him, he will remember and be quick to listen and learn.

My son, pay attention to my wisdom, listen well to my words of insight, that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. Proverbs 5:1-2

Soccer Attention Span...Zero

Alex is playing soccer this semester.

I had been thinking it would be a good idea for Alex to be in an activity since Michael is in Cub Scouts and I was afraid he might be feeling left out, so when Heather told me that Hayden was playing and asked if Alex was, I thought that would work since...

Alex can run very fast.

Alex can kick the ball very hard.

Alex can do both at the same time and hit it in the goal.

When he wants to.

I have come to find out that Alex is not much for organized activities...Alex lives in Alexland, population 1, and is very happy there.

Seriously, Alex has always been able to entertain himself for hours either playing with his animals in his room or finding as many bugs possible outside.

So while all of the other kids are practicing soccer, Alex is being the Ant Whisperer, he really plays in ant piles and they don't bite him.

His poor, patient coach, I guess it is good for Aaron that he didn't get on his team, is constantly calling Alex back over. Alex obeys and then a couple minutes later he is off on his own again.

He does really well in the games because everyone is cheering and he knows he will get snack...until the last ten minutes and then he decides he is done.

We tried it...

It has been fun...

but Michael pretty much summed it up last night at practice, I was sitting in my cool chair in a bag and Michael was sitting in my lap...Alex was doing his thing and Michael looked at me and said in his very serious grown up voice, "I don't think Alex should play soccer anymore."

We'll see what's next.

Funniest Saying Ever

Alex was sitting in my lap at the table before dinner.

I was playing with his hair and started to notice little bits of dirt in it.

I said "Alex, there is dirt in your hair, were you rolling around on the ground today?"

Alex said, "no, I was throwing dirt and seeds up in the air."

I said, "and it all landed on your head?"

Alex looked at me and said, "mom, flowers will grow"!!!!

Such a funny kid.

People run on a pool of oobleck

This is what we intended on doing.

This is NOT what happened.

Do you have any idea how many boxes of cornstarch it takes to make oobleck?

We started out with 12 boxes and a plastic kiddie pool. The 12 boxes barely covered the bottom of the pool.

Nichole and Michael went to Krogers covered in the white mess to buy 10 more boxes.

I can not even imagine how many HUNDREDS maybe even THOUSANDS of boxes they used for this video.

Kaylene and Nichole have the pictures, even though we did not fill the pool up to the top and run across it, we had so much fun.

Nichole and Libby were like Lucy and Ethel stomping on the cornstarch and water to mix it together.

It really does work. It is solid and liquid.

The boys had a ball squeezing it through their hands and mixing it.

When sweet little Easton first got there, he looked at me like "you want me to touch that stuff"? He is his fathers son. But it didn't take long for him to join right in.

Alex ate a lot of it.

It makes your hair very shiny and clean.

A good time was had by all!!!

We Are Making Oobleck

Unlike this book, we are not bored and Oobleck will not fall from the sky and gunk up our city (you should read this book).

I love Dr. Seuss.

But, we are making Oobleck on Friday night.
Most directions for making Oobleck are
1 cup water
1 1/2 cup cornstarch
food coloring
Mix together and have fun.

We, my sweet Nichole and Mary, and I are doing this on a much larger scale.
We are making a pool of oobleck.
What is oobleck you ask?
Oobleck is both a solid and a liquid. It takes the shape of whatever container you put it in (a pool) if you touch it, as long as you are moving, you can hit it or run on it, it is a solid.
If you stop, it turns to liquid.
Ours will be blue like water.
What a perfect illustration of when you are keeping your eyes on the Lord and moving forward you are ok...the minute you stop, you sink.
It will be fun, we will eat hot dogs and get messy.
Come join us.
